Finding the correct colors for websites and other things? [closed]

Question

I have terrible design abilities, and I can never find out what colors should be used with other colors.

How do web developers know which colors will look good together? For example, with the site: http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/give-back.aspx, the blue they used for the donate button and the red for the headers and selected menu. If I want to use a blue or a red, how do I know which will look good. Is it just trial and error?

Answer

No, it’s not just trial and error (though you will often end up having to manually tweak a little).

There are programs and websites that will automate (to some extent) generation of palettes from scratch, from images, or from a base color. Some let you choose by theme, some based on images, others are more technical, and some are not even officially for computers.

No doubt you can find one that suits you by searching for color schemes, color combinations, and color palettes.
